Active City Summer - Free outdoor sports under professional supervision in Hamburg

For the better part of the summer of 2020, sports clubs and gyms had to remain closed. When sport was finally allowed again, albeit under restrictions, many in Hamburg were eager to get moving again. The Active City Summer initiative came right on time with a free and well-rounded outdoor sports programme for the people of Hamburg and returned again in 2021 to much success.

Professional trainers from partner associations took to the fields, athletic facilities and water to offer a variety of programmes for anyone interested in participating. From functional training in Eimsbüttel to qigong in Wandsbek and yoga in Wilhelmsburg to beach volleyball in Bergedorf, there’s an exciting option to help everyone strengthen their bodies. The programme is welcoming for all fitness levels, with professional supervision ensuring a safe workout space for all.

Activecitysummer.de (German only) provides a concise overview of the schedule. All Hamburgers were welcome in the summer 2020 courses, but registering was mandatory in order to trace any possible COVID-19 infections.

Successful every summer

Well over 9,000 Hamburg residents took part in the free athletics programme in 2019, when more than 1,000 hours of 93 varieties of outdoor sports activities were offered at 74 locations. From boxing to Latin dance, each event was professional, inclusive, accessible, and fun - no contract required. Several Hamburg-based associations and institutions took part in this unique 90-day offer, all with the declared goal of encouraging everyone in Hamburg to do outdoor sport at least once a week.

See our Active City page for further information on sports in Hamburg and information about the 2022 programme as it becomes available.
