Markets in Hamburg

Hamburg hosts a multitude of weekly markets for fresh produce and flea markets for antiques and collectibles. Browse through our recommendations below and compile your personal shopping list. Second-hand furniture for your new Hamburg flat? A unique souvenir for the loved ones back home? Or an authentic piece of Hamburg’s everyday life? You'll find it all at the markets.

Weekly Markets

Hamburg's most popular  market is, of course, the fish market. The 'Fischmarkt' is a major tourist attraction. Rise early or stay up late for this Sunday morning must-do. Screaming at the top of their lungs, vendors advertise fish, fruit, vegetables and flowers. In the adjoining market hall, you can dance to live music or enjoy a traditional fish sandwich accompanied by the first or last beer of the day.

On Tuesdays and Fridays, the Isemarkt becomes a community meeting point in the elegant residential district of Eppendorf. Europe's longest open-air market stretches for kilometers along the banks of Isebek canal, between the U3 stops Eppendorfer Baum and Hohelüftbrücke. The market is located right underneath the U-Bahn tracks, so you can browse the stalls in rainy weather, too. You can shop for everything from fresh produce and coffee to books and tools.

Markets with a focus on organic produce can be found in Ottensen on Wednesdays and Saturdays as well as in Eppendorf on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. In St. Pauli, you can visit the night market. Even after working long hours, when every other market has been cleaned up by the seagulls, you can still find fresh goods at this market on Spielbudenplatz.

Flea Markets

Every Saturday, you can browse through vintage and retro chic items at the Flohschanze flea market, located around the old slaughterhouse across from the U3 stop Feldstraße in the hip Schanzenviertel district. On Wednesdays and Saturdays there is a regular flea market on the grounds of the Bahrenfeld racecourse.

In Winter, the Messehallen exhibition centre hosts the extremely popular indoor flea markets on Saturdays. The Second Emma flea market attracts fashion and prosecco-loving women of all ages and is held on Friday nights. Every Saturday, Der.Die.Sein market presents designer items at the  architecturally stunning Unilever building.

Christmas Markets

Hamburg's Christmas markets are a festive and memorable experience that can't be missed. Between late November and late December, you can find a Christmas market in every corner of the city. People swarm the booths and stands for mulled wine, candies and gift ideas. Some of the most notable Christmas markets are located on Jungfernstieg, on Rathausmarkt square in front of City Hall, and around Altona station. Santa Pauli on Reeperbahn is an adult only market that combines classic Christmas atmosphere with the sex-appeal of St. Pauli.
