Day Trips Haithabu Viking Museum

Explore the exciting history of the Vikings at the Haithabu museum, which includes five accurately reconstructed viking houses!

Haithabu Viking Museum

Due to its perfect location close to the sea, the area of Haithabu was fiercely fought over, and was one of the Vikings’ most important settlements. The Haithabu museum, which is now on this land, gives a modern and exciting insight into life back then.

Comprising seven accurately reconstructed Viking houses on an open-air site, the museum allows you to experience a taste of authentic Viking life. In summer, visitors can even meet the ‘Vikings’ that live in these houses, and join them as they demonstrate their skills and crafts. They may even cook some of their favourite Viking dishes.

Archeological museum

Next to the Viking houses is the archeological museum. Refurbished in 2010, it displays over a hundred years of archaeological findings and research. Spread across five themed rooms, there are many exhibitions, such as one on the manufacture of everyday items or valuables crafted especially for export. See exhibitions on the local elite, their language, beliefs and customs, as well as discovering more about the role of Vikings and their rise to prominence. Visitors are invited to head outside and use all their senses to explore the exciting settlement to get a taste of true Viking life.
