Detailed description

You can apply for the award if you are involved in a local, non-profit and innovative project that is no older than three years and that improves the quality of life of groups or individuals. This particularly applies to small and medium-sized initiatives or associations that generally have little money but want to make a social difference with good engagement projects. Good examples of social innovations are - in addition to the idea of food banks or the concept of a street newspaper - various projects in the areas of intercultural cooperation or district design (for example urban gardening). Special neighborhood initiatives, intergenerational cooperation and open source movements also belong to the broad spectrum of innovative engagement.

When awarding the prize, as many areas of Hamburg's volunteer landscape as possible should be considered. The winner of the two group prizes of 3,000 euros each can be a legal entity (for example, registered associations, etc.) or several natural persons who volunteer and do so free of charge, work in Hamburg and started this work a maximum of three years before the start of applications for the respective award year. In addition, an individual will be honored for their voluntary work with a prize of 2,000 euros, which will be used to finance further training. The people to be honored must contribute to improving people's living conditions through their voluntary work and stand out through particularly innovative work.

The award winners are selected by an independent panel of eight judges chaired by the Senator of the Social Affairs Department. The awards are made on the recommendation of this jury, whose names are presented each year on the authority's website.
