Detailed description
The Autobahn GmbH is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operation as well as the financing and asset management of the motorways. The Autobahn GmbH has its headquarters in Berlin, as well as 10 regional branches, 41 branch offices and 189 motorway maintenance depots.
In addition to motorways, Autobahn GmbH is also responsible for federal roads in the three city states of Hamburg, Berlin and Bremen. Autobahn GmbH acts as the developer, plans measures, implements them and carries out operational services. Autobahn GmbH also carries out administrative tasks:
- finance investments
- Build new highway infrastructure and substantial renovations
- operate motorways all year round and comprehensively (for example: winter service)
- Managing the highway asset on behalf of the federal government
- Maintaining motorway infrastructure in a forward-looking and condition-based manner
- Planning measures for construction and maintenance
As one of the largest and most diverse infrastructure operators in Germany, Autobahn GmbH is responsible for around 13,000 kilometers of motorway network in Germany and is working to make the motorway network more efficient. Autobahn GmbH implements innovative and sustainable mobility projects that are equally important for society and the economy.
On January 1, 2020, the Northern branch took over the planning and construction of the motorways for the states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Since January 1, 2021, the region of northern Lower Saxony, the Stade and Lüneburg locations and the motorway operating services have also been part of the Northern branch's area of responsibility. In total, the Northern branch manages an existing network of over 700 km, including around 28 km of federal roads in Hamburg. The Northern branch assumes responsibility for all sections of route, tunnels, bridges, drainage systems, retention basins and sewage treatment basins in northern Germany. The branch's area of responsibility also includes the fields of traffic management, construction site coordination, telematics, strategic traffic development, environmental and noise protection and much more.
The Tunnel Operations Competence Center (Elbtunnel Operations Center) is responsible for the operation of the following tunnels:
- A7: Elbtunnel, Stellingentunnel, Schnelsentunnel
- A23: 3 underpasses
- A1: Moorfleettunnel
- A255: Veddel bus tunnel
- Fuhlsbüttel bypass: Krohnstieg tunnel, Holtkoppel enclosure, Alsterkrugchaussee tunnel
- Wallringtunnel
- Deichtortunnel
The Tunnel Operations Centre performs the following functions for the motorways in the Hamburg city area:
- tunnel monitoring
- incident reporting office
- arranges winter service
