What does Autobahn GmbH do?
Autobahn GmbH, with its headquarters in Berlin, 10 regional branches, 41 branch offices and 189 motorway maintenance depots, is responsible for planning, building, maintaining and operating the motorways, as well as financing and managing their assets.
In addition to motorways, Autobahn GmbH will also be responsible for federal roads in the three city states of Hamburg, Berlin and Bremen from January 1st, 2021.
Autobahn GmbH will assume the role of builder, plan and implement the structural measures and carry out operational services (e.g. carrying out winter services).
Administrative tasks of Autobahn GmbH:
Financing: financing investments

• Construction: Build new highway infrastructure and substantial upgrades
• Operation: operate motorways all year round and comprehensively (e.g. winter service)
• Management: Manage the Autobahn asset on behalf of the owner (the federal government).
• Preservation: Preserve motorway infrastructure with foresight and condition
• Planning: planning measures for construction and maintenance

Since January 1, 2021, the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes has been responsible for the Autobahns in Germany.
As one of the largest and most diverse infrastructure operators in Germany, we are responsible for around 13,000 kilometers of motorway network in Germany. In addition to planning, construction and maintenance, our tasks also include operation, financing and asset management.
Our employees throughout Germany work every day to make the motorway network even more efficient. Thanks to a central organization paired with regional and local expertise, we combine the best for a high-performance transport network. For the first time, we have the opportunity to focus on the entire network and to set uniform standards nationwide. This is how we implement innovative and sustainable mobility projects that are equally important for society and the economy.
When planning and implementing our diverse tasks, it is important to us to be a reliable partner for everyone whose primary goal is to connect. We are always open to suggestions and criticism and take them seriously.

The North branch
The North branch took over the planning and construction of the motorways for the states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein on January 1, 2020. This made us the first of a total of ten Germany-wide Autobahn GmbH branches to start operations. Since January 1, 2021, the region of northern Lower Saxony, the Stade and Lüneburg locations, and the motorway operating services have also been part of the northern branch's area of responsibility. In total, the North branch looks after an existing network of more than 700 km, including approx. 28 km of federal roads in Hamburg.
We assume responsibility for all route sections, tunnels, bridges, drainage systems, retention basins, clarifiers and much more in northern Germany. Our engineers and technicians take care of the regular inspection of all systems and their maintenance in order to guarantee you safe use of the motorways in the north.
The area of responsibility of the branch also includes the topics of traffic management, construction site coordination, telematics, strategic traffic development, environmental and noise protection and much more. We are the right contact for you for all questions relating to the federal trunk roads in the north.

The tunnel operation competence center (Elbtunnelbetriebszentrale) is responsible for the operation of the following tunnels:

• A7: Elbe Tunnel, Stellingen Tunnel, Schnelsen Tunnel
• A23: 3 underpasses
• A1: Moorfleet Tunnel
• A255: Veddel bus tunnel
• Bypass Fuhlsbüttel: Krohnstieg tunnel, Holtkupplung enclosure, Alsterkrugchaussee tunnel
• Wallring tunnel
• Deichtor tunnel

The tunnel operations center performs the following functions for the motorways in the city of Hamburg :

• takes over the tunnel monitoring
• is the reporting point for events
• organizes the winter service
