Health insurance contribution for students

Prerequisites

• Age limit for family insurance: 25 years of age
• After the family insurance has expired, it may be possible to be insured under the student health insurance scheme.

Please note

Students are obligated to take out insurance up to the age of 30. In exceptional cases, this period will be extended.

If you enroll for a course of study, you must prove that you have health insurance. Even if you don't live in Germany.
Health insurance is also obligatory for periods of practical work that are completed during the course of study.
As a rule, students can get family insurance from their parents in a statutory health insurance company free of charge, provided that one parent is a member of a statutory health insurance company. However, family insurance is only possible up to the age of 25.

For students who are married or in a registered civil partnership, family insurance is possible for the person sharing the marriage or civil partnership if they are insured under statutory health insurance.
If health insurance through the parents or partner is not possible, statutory health insurance companies or private health insurance companies offer reduced premiums.
