Resignation from the church at the Hamburg-City customer center
Would you like to leave the church or another religious community under public law?
The Hamburg-City customer center offers the option of leaving the church for all people registered in Hamburg across all districts.
Important notes
Prerequisites
The prerequisite for leaving the church in the Hamburg-City customer center is a place of residence in Hamburg.
Of legal age:
- Personal appearance required.
- Power of attorney not possible.
Minor:
- Until the child reaches the age of 14, the legal guardians must declare their withdrawal in person at the registry office. The presence of children from the age of 12 is required.
- From the age of 14, the child is of legal age and can make the declaration itself.
Documents required
Federal identity card or passport.
Please note
- The tax office is automatically informed of the change or the departure from the church.
- The declaration of resignation is also possible in writing via a notary. There are additional costs, which you should clarify directly with the notary.
Deadlines
At the end of the month in which the resignation takes effect, the church tax liability ends. From the following month you no longer have to pay church tax.

Furthermore, a visit to the customer center is only possible with an appointment. You can book an appointment online (www.hamburg.de/kundenzentrum) or by telephone on 040 115. There you will also receive information about services that are currently only provided in writing.
