Housing benefit change

  •
You can submit a change request while receiving housing benefit.
You must notify us immediately of any changes that lead to a reduction.
  •

Detailed description

You can submit a new application for higher housing benefit as a subsidy towards your housing costs while you are still receiving housing benefit if

  • Your overall income has decreased
  • has increased the number of household members to be considered, or
  • Your rent or home ownership charge has increased.
These changes can, but do not necessarily have to, lead to an increase in housing benefit.
You must submit the application for increased housing benefit to your local housing benefit authority. The conditions for this claim are checked. The increase in housing benefit takes place from the time the application is submitted. A retrospective increase in housing benefit is generally not possible.

You may be affected by a reduction in housing benefit payments if
  • reduced the number of household members
  • Your income increases or
  • reduce their rent or burden.
The housing benefit office can decide on this ex officio and assert claims for reimbursement. Therefore, please notify us of any changes immediately.

Information

Prerequisites

The requirements for a change in housing benefit are:

  • the reduction or increase in the income to be taken into account by more than 15%,
  • the increase or decrease in the number of household members,
  • the increase or decrease of the rent or charge to be taken into account in the case of residential property by more than 15%.
These changes can, but do not have to, lead to an increase in housing benefit.
For details, please contact your local housing benefit authority.

Documents required

The following is required to notify changes:

  • Evidence of change in rent or encumbrance
  • Proof of changed income
  • Evidence of the change in the household members to be taken into account.
In individual cases, additional documents (e.g. additional income, proof of property, self-disclosure of a self-employed person, income forecast for the self-employed, proof of severe disability, etc.) may be required.

Please note

If your financial situation or your living conditions have improved or changed, the housing allowance may be reduced. You are therefore obliged to inform the housing benefit authority immediately of any changes that could lead to a reduction in housing benefit

Deadlines

The increase in housing benefit takes place from the time the application is submitted. A retrospective increase in housing benefit is generally not possible.

Procedure

You will only receive a higher housing benefit if you apply for an increase.
You can send this application to the housing benefit office responsible for you. It is sufficient to submit the application in writing - personal visits are not necessary.
You are obliged to notify us immediately of any changes that could lead to a reduction in the housing benefit payment.
After processing you will receive a notification.

Processing time

The processing time depends, among other things, on the completeness of the information and the submission of the evidence required to process the application.

On average, it takes 17 weeks (average as of July 2024) before you receive your housing benefit notice.

Longer processing times will not be at your expense: housing benefit can also be paid retroactively for periods from the date of receipt of the application.
