Conducting dental check-ups in schools and daycare centers

School dental services promote the dental health of children and adolescents through age-appropriate programs.

Detailed description

To detect dental damage and misalignments in children at an early stage, the school dental service offers dental examinations for children and adolescents as part of group dental prophylaxis. The aim is to

  • to instill in children an awareness and sense of responsibility for the health of their teeth
  • to improve oral hygiene
  • Early detection and prevention of dental diseases
  • To inform parents and advise them if requested.
  • To encourage dental treatment if necessary

Dental group prophylaxis is carried out in nurseries, kindergartens and schools.
Group prophylaxis specialists, as well as dentists from the public health service, are involved in this.
This is a population-based medical measure. It cannot be used as an individual service.

The examinations take place in the daycare centers by appointment.

Parents or legal guardians can object to their child being examined.

After the examination, all children receive the "Green Parent Letter" with the examination results and, if applicable, information on the necessity of a dental visit.

Preventive program for children with an increased risk of tooth decay

As part of group prophylaxis, the school dental service, in cooperation with the Hamburg State Association for the Promotion of Youth Dental Care (LAJH), offers first-grade elementary school students with an increased risk of caries, as well as all special needs students in the first grade, participation in a free prophylaxis program (for at least four years) at school. This intensive program includes, with parental consent, twice-yearly tooth brushing exercises with the children, followed by fluoride treatments for their permanent teeth. The children receive a prophylaxis passport in which all measures are documented.
