Every two years, the Ministry of the Interior and Sports has updated storm surge information distributed to the affected households for the population. Because the type and extent of the danger are different in the storm flood-prone areas, nine different editions are made for the individual urban areas. For the first time, 85,000 households in the Alster catchment area will also receive the brochures. This means that all citizens who live in low-lying areas of Hamburg are now supplied with storm surge information. In addition to general information and instructions on how to behave, the brochures also contain a map section that contains specific information about the respective storm surge risk.
A flooding risk from extreme storm surges is very unlikely in the affected urban areas due to the good flood protection, but such an event cannot be completely ruled out. Therefore, the Ministry of the Interior and Sport informs the citizens of Hamburg at regular intervals about how to behave in such a case.

= by using an internet geoportal or an app for altitude measurement, the specific altitude of your house can be determined. For example, if you enter the term altitude determination in the search mask of your browser, you will receive various suggestions for providers who can provide you with the altitude determination free of charge. There are providers here where you only have to enter your address and you will receive the specific altitude of your house. With other providers, simply click on the location of your house on the map and you will receive the relevant information.
For legal reasons, the Ministry of the Interior and Sports is not allowed to recommend a provider to you. Use of these geoportals is your own responsibility.

How high is the risk in the Alster area from storm surges?
= In the Alster area there is a low residual risk from storm surges. The Hamburg authorities are obliged by the flood management directive of the European Union to inform the population about it. The risk of flooding from storm surges in the Alster area is relatively unlikely. Since the risk cannot be completely ruled out, the authority informs.
