Apply for a short-term license plate

Prerequisites

• Your main residence is in Hamburg or the vehicle was last registered in Hamburg.
• Your vehicle is not registered (for seasonal license plates, this is only possible outside the seasonal period).
• You canYou must provide proof of a person registered in Hamburg who is authorized to receive mail if you do not have a residence in Germany.
• You can submit a purchase contract for the vehicle bought in Hamburg if you do not have your main residence in Hamburg.

Vehicle requirements:

• The vehicle has
  • an EC type approval or an EC individual approval or an operating permit,
  • a main inspection report for used vehicles,
  • Motor vehicle liability insurance.

Documents required

• a valid identity card or passport with current proof of residence
• The electronic insurance confirmation for short-term license plates as an eVB code (available from the car insurance company)
• the registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration document) or registration certificate Part II (vehicle title) or, for new vehicles, the CoC document (Certificate of Conformity) or, if applicable, the foreign registration certificate with proof of deregistration abroad and the CoC document
  (The vehicle registration certificate Part I or Part II can also be submitted as a copy)
• If the vehicle owner is not registered in Germany: A person authorized to receive the document who is registered in Hamburg must be named and personally present a valid identity card or passport with current proof of registration (residence must be proven with address in conjunction with proof of identity). If no address is shown on the document, the first and last name of the applicant and the first and last name and address of the authorized recipient will be recorded.
• Valid inspection certificate of the main inspection (HU) - a copy is sufficient - and, if applicable, proof of the safety inspection carried out for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes permissible total mass; otherwise, the short-term license plate will be limited to the direct route to the nearest inspection organization.
• Proof of the vehicle's location in Hamburg if your main residence is not in Hamburg (for example, a purchase contract from a Hamburg dealer)

Additionally, if an authorized representative submits the application:

• the original power of attorney along with a legible color copy of the authorized representative's identification.
• the original identification document of the authorized representative

Companies or associations must also submit the following documents:

• Proof of company/association registration with a current Hamburg address (for example, an extract from the commercial register or an extract from the register of associations)

If an authorized representative submits the application:

• the original power of attorney along with a legible color copy of the authorized representative's identification.
• the original identification document of the authorized representative

Please note

If the vehicle does not have a valid certificate of roadworthiness (HU) or a valid operating permit, the short-term license plate will only be issued for the journey on the direct route to the nearest testing organization within Hamburg.

Temporary license plates cannot be pre-dated.

Temporary license plates are only valid within Germany.

For travel abroad to EU countries, inquiries must be made at the respective embassy.

Issuance of a short-term license plate is also possible for vehicles with seasonal license plates (outside the seasonal period).

Deadlines

From the date of issue, the temporary license plate may be used on public roads for a maximum of five calendar days. The expiration date is visible on the right-hand side of the temporary license plate. After this date, the temporary license plate automatically loses its validity. Postponing it to a future date is not possible, as this would exceed the five-day expiration date.

Procedure

• Book an appointment online.
  • On our website, select the category "Vehicle Registration"
  • Then book "Application for short-term license plate"
  • You will receive an email. Confirm your reservation using the link in the email.
• Bring all necessary documents and the appointment confirmation with you to your appointment at the LBV.
• Scan the QR code on your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
• Take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your call number.
• Your request is being processed.

Processing time

Your request will usually be processed immediately.

Fees

The fees amount to EUR 10.50.
