License plate, short-term license plate

Prerequisites

The application to the Landesbetrieb Verkehr (LBV) is only possible if

• the main residence of the applicant is in Hamburg or
• the vehicle was last registered in Hamburg and
• the vehicle is not registered (with seasonal license plates only possible outside the seasonal period)
• the applicant who does not have a place of residence in Germany must provide proof of a person who is registered in Hamburg and who is entitled to receive , who must personally present a valid identity card or passport with a current confirmation of registration
• the applicant, who does not have a main residence in Hamburg, can present a sales contract stating that the vehicle was purchased in Hamburg

Documents required

The following documents must be available for the application:

• a valid identity card or passport with current registration confirmation
• the electronic confirmation of insurance for short-term license plates as eVB code (available from motor vehicle insurance)
• the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document) or registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document) or, for new vehicles, the CoC paper (certificate of conformity) or, if applicable, the foreign registration certificate with proof of de-registration abroad (registration certificate part I or part II can also be copied to be presented)
• If the person keeping the vehicle is not registered in Germany: the details of a person who is registered in Hamburg and who is entitled to receive the vehicle and who must personally present a valid identity card or passport with a current confirmation of registration
• A valid inspection certificate from the main inspection (copy sufficient) and, if necessary, proof of the safety inspection carried out for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, otherwise the short-term license plate will be limited to the direct route to the next inspection organization
• If the applicant does not have a main residence in Hamburg, the location of the vehicle in Hamburg must be proven (e.g. purchase contract from a Hamburg dealer)

In addition, if an authorized representative makes the application:

• the power of attorney in the original with the legible color copy of the ID of the person authorized to act
• the authorized representative's ID in the original

Companies or associations must also submit the following documents:

• proof of company / association with current Hamburg address (e.g. an extract from the commercial register or an extract from the association's register)

If an authorized representative makes the application:

Please note

• If the vehicle has no valid proof of the general inspection or no valid operating permit, the short-term license plate is only issued for the journey on the direct route to the next inspection organization within Hamburg.
• Temporary license plates cannot be postdated.
• Short-term license plates are only valid within Germany.
• External trips to the EU must be inquired at the respective embassy.
• The issue of a short-term license plate is also possible for vehicles with seasonal license plates (outside the seasonal period)

Appointment booking
1. Visit the website for booking appointments (see link below) and select the service Application for short-term license plates under the service group Admission, private customers .
2. Use location selection to display appointments at a specific location
3. Use the date picker to find the next available date regardless of your location
4. Select a free appointment (date and time) in the calendar that is displayed.
5. Enter your name and email address for the booking.

You will then receive a confirmation of the appointment. Please bring this with you to the appointment.

Deadlines

From the date of issue, the short-term license plate may be used on public roads for a maximum of 5 calendar days. A postponement in the future is not possible, otherwise the 5 calendar days would be exceeded.

Processing time

The temporary registration number can be taken with you immediately, provided the documents are complete.

Fees

The application fee is EUR 10.50. The basis for the fee level is the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).
