Prerequisites
You are the owner of a dog.
Documents required
- Identity card or passport with last registration confirmation
- Evidence of anti-counterfeiting marking (microchip)
- Proof of liability insurance with details of deductible and insured amount
- Information about the breed and size of your dog (shoulder height, for puppies the expected shoulder height) and, if applicable, dog tax exemption or reduction notice
Please note
You can register your dog at a Hamburg Service location of your choice - but not in writing or by telephone - or at the responsible Department of Consumer Protection, Trade and Environment.
Online registration is also possible, see links. This online service allows you to register and deregister dogs in the Hamburg dog register, change data or apply for permits.
By registering/deregistering your dog with the dog register, you have already fulfilled your tax obligation. The data will be forwarded to the responsible tax office. The dog tax notice will be sent automatically within 4 to 8 weeks.
Microchip requirement for dogs: All dogs aged 3 months and over must be marked with an electronically readable transponder (microchip). The microchip is applied by the local veterinarians. Exceptions can only be permitted for compelling veterinary reasons. Please present a detailed veterinary certificate for this.
Puppies can also be registered without a chip number; this registration is only possible at the Consumer Protection, Trade and Environment Department responsible for you.
Registration can also be carried out by an adult, authorized person. Bringing a dog is not necessary. Dogs are not allowed in the offices of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg!
The fee reduction is only available in the case of dog tax exemption or dog tax reduction according to Section 11 paragraphs 1 to 3 of the Dog Tax Act (not for the other dog tax exemptions or dog tax reductions).
Foster dogs: Foster dogs that stay in Hamburg for longer than two months must be registered. It is irrelevant whether the foster person is the owner or whether the period of stay is not consecutive within a year.
Dog liability insurance: All dog owners must take out liability insurance. Minimum insured sum: EUR 1 million, excess: maximum EUR 500. The insurance must at least cover the liability of the animal owner. The insurance certificate must clearly state which dog is insured - ideally, the dog's chip number must be entered.
Deadlines
Registration must be made within 2 weeks of taking up dog ownership or, in the case of puppies, within 3 months of age.
