Prerequisites

You are the owner of a dog.

Documents required

• Identity card or passport with the last confirmation of registration
• Evidence of forgery-proof identification (microchip)
• Proof of liability insurance with details of the deductible and the sum insured
• Information about the breed and size of your dog (shoulder height, for puppies the expected shoulder height) if applicable, dog tax exemption notice or notice of reduction

Please note

Your dog can be registered at a Hamburg Service location or at a consumer protection office of your choice, but not in writing or by telephone. In Hamburg, the Hamburg Service is the responsible office (for the entire city area).

Puppies without a chip number can also be registered. This registration is only possible in the Department of Consumer Protection, Trade and the Environment.

The registration can also be made by an adult, authorized person. It is not necessary to bring the dog. Dogs are not allowed in the offices of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg!

Your data will be forwarded to the tax office responsible for dog tax. An additional tax registration is not required. An additional permit is required for dangerous dogs.

The fee reduction is only available for dog tax exemption or dog tax reduction according to § 11 paragraphs 1 to 3 of the Dog Tax Act (not for the other dog tax exemptions or dog tax reductions).

Chip obligation for dogs
All dogs from the age of 3 months must be identified with an electronically readable transponder (microchip). The microchip is applied by the established veterinarians. Exceptions can only be permitted for compelling veterinary reasons. Please submit a detailed veterinary certificate.

foster dogs
Foster dogs that stay in Hamburg for more than 2 months must be registered. It is irrelevant whether the caregiver is the owner or whether the period of stay within a year is not consecutive.

Dog Liability Insurance
All dog owners must take out liability insurance. Minimum sum insured: EUR 1 million, deductible: maximum EUR 500. The insurance must at least cover the liability of the pet owner. The insurance certificate must clearly show which dog is insured - ideally, the chip number of the dog is entered.

Deadlines

The registration must be made within 2 weeks after starting the dog ownership or in the case of puppies up to the age of 3 months.

Processing time

The processing time is approximately 20 minutes.

Fees

45 euros. Reduction to EUR 22.50 possible in individual cases (proof of ALGII, basic security). Online registration 30 EUR
