Driving license, name change, changes in the requirements

Prerequisites

The application must be made personally. The main residence under registration law is Hamburg. The name change must have already been completed in the identification document (identity card or passport).

Documents required

• the current driver's license
• Identity card or passport with the last registration certificate, if necessary a residence permit with the new name,
• 1 biometric passport photo 35 X 45 mm,
• Index card copy - only required if no EU driving license card has been issued and the last driving license was not issued in Hamburg (see also link)
• International driver's license, if available.

Additionally if you change your name:

• the marriage certificate or the certificate of a change of name

Additionally when changing the driver's license requirements:

• Documents proving that a condition is no longer required (e.g. a medical report).

An ophthalmological report according to Annex 6.2 FeV must be submitted for the deletion of a visual aid.

Please note

For all LBV locations   an online appointment is absolutely necessary.

If you change your driving license, a new EU driving license card will always be issued.

Validity of driving licenses
The validity of the driving licenses issued after January 19, 2013 is limited to 15 years, after which a new issue is required. The driver's license remains valid - no new test is required. Driving licenses issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged by January 19, 2033 at the latest.

1. Under the Driver's License service group, choose the Change of Driver 's License Data service.
2. Use location selection to display appointments at a specific location
   Use the date picker to find the next free appointment regardless of location
3. Choose a free appointment (date and time) in the displayed calendar
4. Enter your name and email address for booking.
5. You will receive an email. Please confirm the appointment.

You will then receive an appointment confirmation. Please bring these with you to the appointment.

Processing time

The production time at Bundesdruckerei is around three to four weeks. Bundesdruckerei will send you the driver's license directly.


Express processing at Bundesdruckerei takes three working days.

Fees

The fees amount to EUR 43.20 and are based on the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt). Additional fees apply for express orders.
