Detailed description

As a driver of certain vehicles used for commercial freight and passenger transport, you must have your driving and rest times monitored. If you use a digital tachograph, you will need a driver card for this purpose. The driver card is valid for five years and must be renewed before it expires. You must apply for the renewal in good time. A new driver card will then be issued to you.

Prerequisites

  • Her main residence is in Hamburg
  • You hold an EU card driving licence issued on or after 19 January 2013.
    • If you still have an older driving license, you must first exchange it for the new EU card driving license format.
  • You already have a driver card.

Documents required

  • a valid identity card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current registration confirmation of the driver
  • a biometric passport photo (35x45 mm) - not older than 1 year
  • The driver's driving licence in the format of the current EU card driving licence (issued from 19 January 2013 onwards)
  • the old driver card
  • For postal applications: the completed application form (see links below)
  • When applying on site: the appointment confirmation

Deadlines

Submit your application for renewal (extension) of your current driver card approximately 4 weeks before its expiry date. The earliest possible time to apply is 6 months before the expiry date.

Procedure

You can apply in person or by mail. You can only apply for a driver card by mail if you have a German EU card driver's license. If you have a foreign EU card driver's license, you must apply for your driver card in person.


Application on site:

  • You book an appointment online.
    • On our website for booking appointments, select the category "Driver's License"
    • Book the appointment "Application for driver card"
    • You will receive an email. Confirm your reserved appointment using the link in the email.
  • Bring all necessary documents and the appointment confirmation with you to your appointment at the LBV.
  • Scan the QR code on your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
  • Take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your call number.
  • Your request will be processed on site.
  • Once produced, the driver card will be sent to you by registered mail.

Application by mail (no on-site visit necessary):

  • You send your documents and the application form by post to the LBV.
  • Your request will be processed on site.
  • Once produced, the driver card will be sent to you by registered mail.

Processing time

The creation of your new driver card takes approximately 5-10 business days. For express orders, it takes 3-5 business days.

Fees

The fee is EUR 41.00.
