Drivers of certain vehicles have to have their driving and rest times monitored; a driver card is required for the digital tachograph.
In all newly registered commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tonnes and buses with more than nine seats, digital tachographs are mandatory as a replacement for manual tachographs. These devices are necessary for recording, saving, displaying, printing and outputting the driver's activity-related data.

Prerequisites
The application to the Landesbetrieb Verkehr (LBV) is only possible if the driver has his main residence in Hamburg and is in possession of an EU driving license with the date of issue from January 19, 2013. If you still have an older driver's license, this must first be exchanged for the new EU card driver's license format. For more information, see Driving License Exchange.
Documents required
Please take the following documents with you to the appointment:
- an identity card or passport with the driver's current registration certificate
- a biometric passport photo 35 x 45 millimeters
- the driver's license in the format of the new EU card driving license (date of issue from January 19, 2013
- the old driver card in the event of damage or renewal
- the appointment confirmation
Please note
period of validity
The driver card is valid for five years. The application for an extension may be submitted no earlier than four weeks before the deadline expires.
Postal application
The driver card can be applied for by post at the LBV if you have a German EU driving license card. When the LBV has received the application form and all the necessary documents, your driver card will then be sent to you by post. A visit to the LBV is not necessary in this case.
If you have a foreign EU driving license card, please apply for your driver card personally at the LBV. To apply on site, please book an appointment. It is not possible for an authorized person to apply.

Appointments are booked via the LBV. Proceed as follows:
1. Select the driver card service under the driver's license service group.
2. Use the location selection to display appointments at a specific location.
3. After choosing the location, use the calendar displayed to choose a free appointment (date and time).
4. Now enter your name and e-mail address for booking.
5. You will receive an email. Please confirm Srie's appointment.
Please be sure to bring the appointment confirmation that you will receive afterwards with you to the appointment.
Procedure & Fees
Processing time
The creation of a driver card takes five to ten working days from receipt of the application.
Fees
The fees range from EUR 38.00 to EUR 41.00. The exact amount of the fee can only be determined on site using the complete documentation. If the driver's license has to be exchanged for the EU card format, an additional EUR 25.30 to EUR 43.20 must be paid. For more information, see Driving License Exchange.
