Converting a service driving license into a general driving license

Detailed description

You can exchange your service driver's license for a general driver's license, which then also allows you to drive motor vehicles on civilian roads. This applies to driver's licenses issued by the German Armed Forces, the police, and the Federal Police. You no longer need to take any new exams such as an eye test, first aid, or driving test to convert.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You have your main residence in Hamburg.
  • You have a valid company driving license.

Documents required

  • a valid identity card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current registration confirmation
  • a biometric passport photo (35x45 millimeters) – not older than 1 year
  • Your service driving license
  • If available: the civilian driver's license, if it is to be extended to include further classes through the conversion.

If you want to not only exchange your driving license for categories C and D but also extend it at the same time, you must comply with additional requirements and submit additional documents. Procedure

  • You book an appointment online.
    • On our website for booking appointments, select the category "Driver's License"
    • Book the appointment "Conversion of foreign driving licence or service driving licence into temporary EU card driving licence"
    • You will receive an email. Confirm your reservation using the link in the email.
  • Bring all necessary documents and the appointment confirmation with you to your appointment at the LBV.
  • Scan the QR code on your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
  • Take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your call number.
  • Your request will be processed on site.
  • The new driver’s license will be sent to you directly from the Federal Printing Office.

Processing time

The production of the new driver's license takes 3 - 4 weeks.

Fees

41.80 EUR - 66.00 EUR


The basis for this is the Fee Schedule for Measures in Road Traffic (GebOSt). The specific fee amount can only be determined on-site based on the submission of all required documentation.
