Apply for a driver's license, bus classes (D, D1, DE, D1E)

Prerequisites

The application can only be made by people who have a valid driver's license (class B) and who have their main place of residence in Hamburg. In principle, the minimum age for classes D and DE is 24 years, although exceptions apply in connection with the qualification as a professional driver.
The application can be submitted a maximum of six months before reaching the minimum age.

Documents required

The following documents must be submitted:

• a valid identity card or passport with a current registration certificate
• a biometric passport photo 35 x 45 millimeters
• a certificate of attendance at the first aid training course
• an ophthalmological report in accordance with Appendix 6 of the Driving License Ordinance (FeV), not older than two years
• a medical report in accordance with Annex 5.1 FeV not older than one year
• a medical report in accordance with Annex 5.2 FeV not older than one year
• a certificate of good conduct (feature O for official purposes, to be applied for at the registration authority)
• Proof of professional driver qualification if the driver's license is used for commercial passenger transport

Please note

Only the driving license offices LBV-Mitte and LBV-Nord are responsible for bus driving licenses.

Validity of the driving license
The driving license for the bus classes is usually only valid for five years. It should be renewed in good time, i.e. four to six weeks before the expiry date. After it has expired, it must be extended within 3 years.

D-class driving licenses that expire between September 1st, 2020 and June 30th, 2021 are automatically extended by 10 months.


The deadlines that have already been extended once without a new expert opinion and expire between September 1st, 2020 and June 30th, 2021 are considered to be extended by a further 6 months or until July 1st, 2021 , whichever is the later.

Fees

Applying for a bus class driving license costs between EUR 40.60 and EUR 69.20. The exact amount depends on the requested class and can only be specifically determined on the basis of the documents. The basis for the level of costs is the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).
