The certificate of time of birth is proof of a person's exact time of birth. You can have a certificate of the time of birth issued on the basis of the birth register maintained by the responsible registry office.
The certificate is issued by the registry office that registered the birth. In federal states in which there is a central register network, it is also possible to obtain the birth time certificate from any other registry office.
A further authentication (legalisation/apostille) is not intended for the certificate.

Prerequisites
Birth registers contain personal data, which is why information from them is subject to data protection restrictions.
Eligible applicants (minimum age: 16 years):
- the person to whom the birth register entry relates
- the spouse or life partner (within the meaning of the Act on Registered Life Partnerships)
- Ancestors and descendants of the data subject
- Siblings with Legitimate Interest
Documents required
To apply for a certificate of time of birth you will need:
- Your identity card or passport (when applying in writing: certified copy),
- if requested or collected by a representative: written authorization from the authorized person, their identity card or passport (original or certified copy) and the identity card or passport of the person represented.

Procedure
Personal application:
- Go to the registry office that registered the birth.
- You must present your identity card or passport for legitimation.
- You usually pay the fee when applying at the registry office.
Application by post or fax:
- Send an informal letter to the relevant registry office asking them to issue a certificate of the time of birth.
- Your letter should contain the following information:
- Name first Name
- Date and place of birth
- if known: registry office and certification number
- Enclose a certified copy of your identity card or passport with the letter.
- You will receive a notification of fees when the certificate is sent to you.
Online application:
Depending on what the city or municipality offers, you can also submit the application online.
Processing time
- Processing usually takes three working days.
- In the case of a personal visit, the certificate will be handed over immediately.
Fees
There is a fee of EUR 9.50 for issuing a certificate of time of birth.

Legal remedies
If the issuance of the certificate is refused, (only) an application for instruction can be made to the district court responsible for the registry office. The objection procedure is only possible with regard to the notification of fees.
