Detailed description

The certificate of time of birth is proof of the exact time of birth of a person. You can have a certificate of your time of birth issued based on the birth register kept by the responsible registry office.

 

Information

Prerequisites

The personal data contained in the birth register are subject to data protection restrictions.
You are eligible to apply as

  • the person to whom the birth registration entry refers,
  • Spouse,
  • Life partner (within the meaning of the Registered Life Partnership Act),
  • Ancestor and descendant of the person concerned or
  • Siblings with legitimate interests.

To receive the information you must be at least 16 years old.

Documents required

To apply for a certificate of time of birth you need:

  • Your identity card or passport (if applying in writing: certified copy),
  • when applying or collecting through a representative:
    • written authorization of the authorized person,
    • their identity card or passport (original or certified copy) and
    • the identity card or passport of the person representing.

Please note

The certificate is issued by the registry office that registered the birth. In federal states where there is a central registry network, it is also possible to obtain the birth time certificate from any other registry office.

Further authentication (legalization/apostille) is not required for the certificate.

Procedure

You can submit the application for a certificate of the time of birth in person.

  • To do this, go to the registry office that registered the birth.
  • You must present your identity card or passport for identification purposes.
  • You usually pay the fee when you apply at the registry office.

In addition to you, a person you trust can also order and collect the certificate for you. To do so, they must present your identity card or passport (original or certified copy) and their own identity card or passport, as well as a written power of attorney.

You can request the certificate of the time of birth in writing.

  • Send an informal letter to the responsible registry office asking them to issue you a certificate of the time of birth.
  • Your letter should contain the following information:
    • Name first Name
    • Date and place of birth
    • if known: registry office and registration number.
  • Please enclose a certified copy of your identity card or passport with the letter.
  • When the certificate is sent to you, you will receive a fee notice.

You can apply for a certificate of birth time electronically via an online service, depending on what the municipality offers.

Processing time


  • The certificate is usually issued within 2 - 10 working days.

  • If you appear in person, the certificate can be issued immediately if the register is already electronic.

Fees

A fee of EUR 19.00 is charged for issuing a certificate of time of birth.

Legal remedies

If the certificate is refused, an application can be made to the Hamburg District Court, Sievekingplatz 1, on the instructions of the registry office. The appeal procedure is only possible with regard to the fee notice.
