Request extended information from the population register

If you need registration data about a person, you can request an extended registration information.

Detailed description

A registration information request provides you with information about a person stored at the residents' registration office. If the information contained in the basic registration information request is insufficient, you can also request an extended registration information request, which includes more information, for example:

  • previous names,
  • Birth date,
  • Place of birth (and country if born abroad)
  • Marital status,
  • current nationalities,
  • previous addresses,
  • Move-in and move-out dates,
  • Surname, first name and address of the legal representative
  • Surname, first name and address of spouse or life partner
  • Date and place of death (if death occurred abroad, also the country)
 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You provide information that allows the person you are looking for to be clearly identified. This means that you already have data about the person in question (usually first and last name, date of birth, gender, or last known address).
  • They demonstrate a legitimate interest. The term "legitimate interest" encompasses any interest of a legal, economic, or even non-material nature that is recognized as worthy of protection.
  • For commercial inquiries, please also state the intended use of the data.

Documents required

  • Proof of identity of the person searching
  • First and last name of the person being sought
  • previous address or date of birth of the person being sought
  • In the case of extended registration information, if necessary additionally: Evidence to substantiate the legitimate interest

Please note

Whether the responsible authority provides you with information is at their sole discretion. Information from the residents' register will not be provided if a restriction on information has been entered in the residents' register or if the registration authority has reason to believe that this could pose a threat to the legitimate interests of the person concerned or another person.

  • You will receive the registration information by post.

You can use this service at any Hamburg Service Residents' Affairs location, regardless of where you live in Hamburg.

Mon-Fri 7am-7pm, visits are only possible by appointment. You can book an appointment online (https://www.hamburg.de/go/17584) or by phone at 040 115.

The elevators are currently out of service, so accessibility is not guaranteed. (As of November 10, 2025)

If you would like to apply for an ID card, passport or children's passport, you can use an existing self-recording terminal (Speed Capture Terminal) to capture the necessary biometric data (photo, signature, fingerprints). Please allow a few minutes more time before your appointment to collect your data. In this case, there is no need to bring a photo.



Use costs 6 euros.
