Detailed description

If you have weapons, weapon parts or ammunition

  • permanently import from abroad to Germany or
  • permanently export from Germany to other European countries or
  • transport through Germany

you must first apply for a transfer permit from the competent authority.

The transport permit is usually issued to you per transport operation if all factual and legal requirements are met.

If you manufacture weapons or trade in weapons and want to transport weapons regularly as part of this activity, you can apply for a “General Transfer Permit” instead of a transfer permit for individual transport operations.

Information

Prerequisites

  • You have a permit to purchase or own firearms and the associated ammunition (for example, a firearms ownership card or firearms trading permit)
  • The recipient of the weapons has already provided you with proof of his or her permission to import and possess the weapons
  • Safe transport by a person authorized to purchase or possess weapons or ammunition is guaranteed

Documents required

  • valid identification document (identity card or passport)
  • for export or transit outside Germany: the import permit of the destination country
  • Your gun license
  • If applicable: your firearms trading license

Please note

If you transport firearms, important weapon parts or ammunition without a permit, you are committing a criminal offense.

For short cross-border transports of weapons, weapon parts or ammunition with return, for example for hunting trips or shooting competitions, a European Firearms Pass is sufficient.

If you want to transport weapons to a country outside the EU or the Schengen area, you may also need a permit under foreign trade law, customs law or other laws. It is advisable to contact the relevant customs office and the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control before transport. If you want to export weapons, weapon parts or ammunition to a country outside the EU or the Schengen Agreement, you must notify the Federal Office for Export Control in advance.

If your weapons, weapon parts or ammunition have permanently crossed the border, bring your firearms license to the firearms authority for updating within 14 days.

Deadlines

The validity of the transfer permit depends on the planned transport date, but may not exceed one year.

The general transfer permit for persons who manufacture or trade weapons on a commercial basis is valid for 3 years.

Procedure

  • You apply for permission and submit the necessary documents.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application and, if necessary, request any missing documents from you.
