Have a certificate for carrying narcotics when travelling abroad certified

If you want to take prescribed narcotics with you on a trip abroad, you will need a certified medical certificate.

Detailed description

For trips of up to 30 days to member states of the Schengen Agreement, you may bring medically prescribed narcotics. You must carry a certificate completed by your treating physician. This certificate must be authenticated before your trip. You need a separate certificate for each prescribed narcotic. The certificate is valid for a maximum of 30 days. This regulation also applies if you are carrying narcotics that are available by prescription in your country of origin but not in your destination country.


Only you personally are permitted to carry the narcotics, along with the required documentation. No one authorized by you may carry them.

The narcotics must have been prescribed by a doctor.

Documents required

Certificate of the prescription of the narcotics from your doctor. The relevant form must be used for trips to the states of the Schengen Agreement.

Please note

When traveling to non-Schengen countries, you should find out about the legal situation there before you start your journey. Special permits may be required. If the doctor's practice is in Hamburg, there is an all-round responsibility. Any health department can be visited. If the doctor's practice is in another federal state, Hamburg is not the point of contact.

The regulation on bringing narcotics into the contracting states of the Schengen Agreement also applies to persons resident in another member state when entering the Federal Republic of Germany, even if they are carrying narcotics that are prescribable in the country of origin but not in the Federal Republic of Germany.

None. It is recommended to submit the request well in advance of the trip.

Procedure

  • Have your doctor issue you a certificate stating that the narcotics have been prescribed for you.
  • Have this certified by the health department and take it with you on your trip.
  • When traveling in Schengen countries, a certified certificate from the doctor about the prescription is sufficient.
  • When traveling to other countries, you should carry a certified copy of the medical prescription / medical certificate in English with you, which contains information on the individual and daily dose, so that an assessment can be made as to whether the narcotics you are carrying are appropriate for the duration of the trip are.
