If you are staying in Germany for international law, humanitarian or political reasons and currently have a toleration permit, you have the opportunity to apply for a longer-term residence permit after 30 months. This applies not only to you, but also to your spouse or partner as well as your unmarried minor children who live with you in a family community. The residence permit is issued when you are successfully integrated into society.

- You have had a toleration permit for at least 30 months
- The international law, humanitarian or political reasons on the basis of which you were granted toleration still apply
- You have integrated yourself sustainably into society and can demonstrate at least German language skills
- If you have the opportunity to attend an integration course, you must also provide proof of written knowledge of the German language
- There is no interest in expelling you

The documents and information must generally be presented in German. In individual cases, the responsible body may require less or more evidence.
Deadlines
You can only apply for a residence permit after 30 months of tolerated stay in Germany. You must apply for the residence permit in good time before your toleration expires.

Procedure
- Arrange an appointment with the local authority responsible.
- At the appointment you apply for the residence permit and submit the necessary documents.
- You will be fingerprinted during your appointment.
- If your application is approved, the immigration authority will commission the Federal Printing Office to produce the electronic residence permit. A few weeks later you can collect the electronic residence permit from the responsible office.
- If your application is rejected, you will receive the decision in a written notice.
