If your minor child has a residence permit due to his or her good integration in Germany, you can also be granted a residence permit under certain conditions. The residence permit is then usually granted for a limited period. If your residence permit is expiring but your child's is still valid or its extension is foreseeable, you can also apply for an extension of your residence permit at the responsible office.

Prerequisites
- You are the parent with custody of a minor child of foreign origin
- You live with the child in a family community
- Your child is well integrated in Germany and therefore has a permanent residence permit
- As a result of your child's good integration, you have also received a residence permit
- Your residence permit is still valid
Documents required
- Recognized and valid identity document (e.g. passport or passport replacement)
- Current biometric photo in passport format (45 x 35 mm)
- Your current residence permit
- Your child's current residence permit
The documents and information must generally be presented in German. In individual cases, the responsible body may require less or more evidence.

Procedure
- Arrange an appointment with the local authority responsible.
- At the appointment you apply for the residence permit and submit the necessary documents.
- You will be fingerprinted during your appointment.
- If your application is approved, the immigration authority will commission the Federal Printing Office to produce the electronic residence permit. A few weeks later you can collect the electronic residence permit from the responsible office.
- If your application is rejected, you will receive the decision in a written notice.
