Prerequisites

Documents required

Please refer to the "Information Sheet of the Hamburg Registry Offices" for the "Child's Play" service for the required documents.

Should any further documents be required, the registry office will contact you.

Please note

In addition to the birth certificate (which is subject to a fee) for your records, you will receive free certificates for the following purposes:

• Application for parental allowance.
• Applying for maternity benefits from the health insurance company.
• Application for child benefit if you have not consented to the transmission of birth data to the child benefit office.

After the birth is registered, your child will automatically be entered in the residents' register.
You will automatically receive your tax identification number from the Federal Central Tax Office.

You can obtain the form for the first name notification at the hospital, on the website hamburg.de (Kinderleicht zum Kindergeld) or directly from the registry office.
If you have questions about determining your first and last name, please contact the registry office.

If you are planning a confidential birth, contact a counseling center, the hospital, or another facility that offers maternity care.

Deadlines

• Register the birth within one week of the day after the birth.


• Report the birth no later than the 3rd working day after the birth if the child was stillborn.

Procedure

• As parents or midwives, you can use one of the standardized forms "Child's play to child benefit" for the birth notification.
• Alternatively, as parents you can use the online service "Kinderleicht zum Kindergeld" (Child's play to child benefit).
• If the child was born in a maternity facility, the necessary documents can be submitted there in their original form. These documents, along with the birth certificate, will then be forwarded to the responsible authority.
• If the child was not born in a maternity facility but, for example, at home, you must submit the required documents in their original form to the registry office.
• In addition to the free birth certificates, you can request further birth certificates.
• Additional birth certificates will incur fees. Please transfer these fees to the address indicated in the form ("Service Information" from the "Child Benefit Made Easy" offer).
• The registry office will review your documents and may request further documents and information from you.
• The registry office records the birth of the child.
• You will receive the birth certificates and the original documents you submitted free of charge.
• You may receive additional birth certificates if you have requested (and paid for) them.

Processing time

The processing time depends on the individual case.

Fees

• 19.50 EUR for the birth certificate


• 8.50 EUR for each additional certificate in the same processing step

The birth certificates you need to apply for parental allowance, child benefit and maternity allowance from the health insurance company are free of charge.
