Hamburg is at the forefront nationwide when it comes to designating nature reserves. Over 9% of its land area is currently nature reserves (NSG), a value that no other federal state even comes close to matching.

Detailed description

Alongside the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park, nature reserves are the most strictly protected natural areas in Hamburg. Here the goals of nature conservation and landscape conservation have the greatest possible, if possible even absolute priority over all other usage claims.
As a rule, such areas are placed under nature protection that are home to very rare or even endangered animal and plant species as well as highly endangered habitats.
