Inner and Outer Alster ice cover

  •
In cold winters, the Outer Alster freezes over and forms a huge sheet of ice in the heart of Hamburg. Only in very rare years does the ice reach a safe load-bearing capacity.
  •

Detailed description

If ice forms on the Outer Alster as a result of prolonged, severe frost, the environmental authority carries out ice measurements and determines the carrying capacity of the Alster ice. The results are published in the Ice Condition Report . However, the stability and load-bearing capacity of the ice varies locally and is subject to constant changes due to mechanical and weather-related influences. This cannot be fully represented by the ice measurements.
