Detailed description

If your child is born during a voyage on a German sea-going vessel, the birth must be registered by the Registry Office I in Berlin. The ship's captain receives the notification of the birth from a parent with custody. If the parents are unable to do so, the notification can also be made by another person who was present at the birth.

Prerequisites

  • Birth of a child on a German sea-going vessel regardless of nationality.
  • The sea-going vessel sails under the German flag.

Documents required

  • if parents are married to each other
    • Parents’ birth certificates, if necessary with translation, legalization or apostille
    • Marriage certificate or a certified copy from the marriage register, if necessary with translation, legalization or apostille
  • if parents are not married to each other
    • Mother’s birth certificate, if necessary with translation, legalization or apostille
    • if paternity has already been acknowledged:
      • Declaration of acknowledgment of paternity and declaration of consent of the mother
      • Father's birth certificate
      • if applicable, the declaration of care
      • everything with translation, legalization or apostille if necessary
  • Identity card, passport or a recognized passport replacement document of the parents
  • A marriage certificate and proof of dissolution of the marriage must also be presented if the marriage has since been dissolved or if the husband has died within 300 days before the birth of the child.

Report the birth to the ship's captain immediately. Immediately means without culpable delay.

Procedure

  • You, as the parent with custody or – if you are prevented from doing so – another person who was present at the birth, must report the birth to the ship’s master or captain.
  • The ship's captain takes a written record and forwards the birth notification to the Registry Office I in Berlin.
  • Please enclose the required documents or submit them to the Registry Office I in Berlin at the next opportunity.
  • The registry office I in Berlin records the birth in its birth register.
  • Ordered certificates can be sent to you.

The certification takes place after receipt of the notification and all necessary documents at the Registry Office I in Berlin.
