Detailed description

If you have married or entered into a civil partnership (registered civil partnership) and require proof of this, you can apply for it at the registry office. Please contact the registry office where you were married or entered into the civil partnership.

This certificate proves your marriage or civil partnership with your spouse/civil partner. It contains your first and last names at the time of the marriage/civil partnership and before, the place and date of birth of both spouses/civil partners, and the place and date of the marriage or civil partnership.

You can obtain the marriage certificate in the following forms:

• Marriage certificate

• International marriage certificate

• Certified extract from the marriage register

You can obtain the civil partnership certificate in the following forms:

• Civil partnership certificate

• Certified extract from the civil partnership register

A certified copy from the marriage register or the civil partnership register contains all the data that the registry office has entered in connection with your marriage or civil partnership.

You will receive the certificate, including any subsequent certifications, as a printout from the electronic register.

If the personal status details of your spouse/civil partner change, for example due to a name change, divorce, or dissolution of your civil partnership, the registration entry will be supplemented by a subsequent certification. A new certificate can then be issued upon request.

Marriage and civil partnership registers are kept at the relevant registry office for 80 years. After that, the complete books from which marriage certificates are issued are transferred to the state archives. Electronic registers have been in use since 2009.

For marriage or civil partnership certificates dating back more than 110 years, please contact the Hamburg State Archives (see links).

For vital events (birth, marriage, death) registered at a Hamburg registry office from 2009 onwards, further certificates can be issued at any Hamburg registry office. These certificates bear the annotation "Certificate pursuant to Section 67 Paragraph 3 of the Civil Status Act".
