- If an injured person dies as a result of the damage, the costs of the burial will be covered up to one seventh of the reference value applicable at the time of death according to § 18 Para. 1 SGB IV. The person who arranged the burial is entitled to have the costs of the burial covered.
If an injured person entitled to a pension dies as a result of the damage, there is a claim to a funeral benefit of at least €2,063 (from July 1, 2022).
If an injured person entitled to a pension dies without the death being a consequence of the damage, there is an entitlement to a funeral benefit of up to €1,035 (from July 1, 2022).
First of all, the costs of the burial are paid to the person who arranged the burial. If there is a surplus, the spouse, the registered partner, the children, the parents, the stepparents, the foster parents, the grandchildren, the grandparents, the siblings and the siblings are entitled to claim one after the other if they are with the deceased at the time of death lived in the same household. If there are no such beneficiaries, the surplus will not be paid out.

Benefits to be granted on the basis of other statutory provisions (e.g. death benefit from health insurance or civil servant benefits) are offset against the funeral benefit.
If an injured person dies as a result of damage outside his permanent place of residence, the necessary costs for the transfer of the corpse will be reimbursed. This does not apply if the death occurred during a stay abroad. In this case, however, you can apply for a subsidy.

Procedure
You can apply for the funeral expenses from the responsible utility authority. Send an informal application by post or email to the responsible office. You will then be sent an application form. You can submit the required documents with the completed application.
