Wir sind Hamburg Campaign

Did you know that German citizenship isn't mandatory to become an officer in the Hamburg administrative system?

Wir sind Hamburg Campaign

Hamburg is home to people from a multitude of nations. The administration of the city of Hamburg is a modern service provider to 1.8 million citizens of which more than 500,000 have a migrant background. Hamburg's administrative system manages the city's economy, culture, science, health, environment, security, and finance.

Regardless of nationality, more than 1,000 graduates are recruited annually for vocational or academic training in the general administrative, legal or fiscal system, as well as for Hamburg’s fire and police departments. In 2016, 165 of 961 (17.2%) trainees had a migrant background. Every 1 in 6 trainee and student vacancies was filled accordingly. Applications from candidates with migrant background reached an all-time high of 21.4% (18.7% in 2015) in 2016, exceeding the projected 20% share. Most commonly, applicants had roots in Turkey, Poland, Russia, Kazakhstan, or Afghanistan.

The “Wir sind Hamburg! Bist Du dabei?” (We are Hamburg! Won’t you join us?) campaign is directed at young internationals. Your experience, language skills, and intercultural know-how are in demand! Read up on the campaign's agenda or visit one of the numerous events initiated by “Wir sind Hamburg!” Representatives of the ZAF training centre, which realises the campaign in cooperation with other training authorities and a large number of network partners (such as migrant organisations), will also be happy to help.
