Central Office for Residents - Hamburg Welcome Portal

The Central Office for Residents (Einwohner-Zentralamt) is in charge of naturalisation and asylum procedures. It also handles visa processes for the German diplomatic missions abroad. For immigrants who still reside abroad, the competence lies with the respective German diplomatic mission abroad (embassy, consulate) in their home country.

Visa

The Hamburg Visa Center checks requirements for granting visas in case of intended long-term stays in Germany and issues statements to the German missions abroad. Here you can get general information on the visa issuing procedure (but no information on your application’s current status of processing). Immigrants residing abroad have to apply for a visa at their local German diplomatic mission (e.g. embassy, consulate).

Decisions on asylum applications are however made by the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
