Even though the area is located right next to the busy Sternschanze S-Bahn station, the atmosphere around Schanzenhöfe is pleasantly tranquil. If you're into craft beer, you'll find a little paradise here: Ratsherrn Brewery. Ratsherrn has been offering its own locally-brewed beer as well as 300 additional brews from all over the world since opening its doors in 2013. Several times a week you can do beer tastings and learn how Ratsherrn is produced.
If you're hungry, just head next door — inside the brewery's restaurant, Altes Mädchen (lit. 'Old Girl') you'll find high-quality organic food, over 60 varieties of beer to try, and freshly-baked bread made from the brewery's leftover mash.
Another eatery, Bullerei Deli & Restaurant, is just a few steps away and is run by German TV-chef Tim Mälzer. The Deli opens its doors every day at 11 a.m., and the restaurant opens at 6 p.m.
To regain your spirits after a day of shopping in Schanze, visit the Elbgold Café, where you can see how Arabica fair trade coffee beans are roasted. Or put together a colourful bouquet at Flora Press. This local favourite is much more than a flower shop and even has its own photo studio.
For Hamburg residents, it's worth mentioning that a musical kindergarten, a gallery and some innovative startups are also located in this area. More information can be found on the official website of Schanzenhöfe.
