If you prefer browsing shelves to rummaging through crates, the Bücherflohmarkt at Hamburg’s Zentralbibliothek is an excellent alternative to a classic outdoor flea market. Located in the library building at Hühnerposten, this permanent book flea market offers a constantly changing selection of second-hand titles across genres and subjects.
The books come from donations as well as withdrawn library copies, and the selection includes everything from novels and children’s books to non-fiction, foreign-language titles and specialist topics. Beyond books, visitors can also find media such as CDs, DVDs and vinyl records.
All proceeds go towards a charitable project: the volunteer-run MEDIENBOTEN service, which delivers reading materials to Hamburg residents with limited mobility. It is a simple, meaningful way to pick up a bargain while supporting a good local cause.
When: 1st and 2nd Saturday of each month, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Where: Zentralbibliothek, Hühnerposten 1, Hamburg-Hammerbrook (in the basement)
