Hamburg's Most Stylish Promenade
The old-fashioned word ‘Jungfer’ translates to virgin or maiden in German. Jungfernstieg owes its name to the unmarried daughters of mostly wealthy Hanseatic families, who, on Sundays, were often taken here for a stroll — a rather casual, Hanseatic coming-of-age tradition. In 1838, Jungfernstieg became the first street to be sealed with asphalt. Today, this grand and gracious promenade on the shores of the Binnenalster is one of the most elegant shopping areas in Hamburg’s city centre.
Shopping
While no longer the exclusive domain of wealthy young ladies, Jungfernstieg still offers luxury shopping at its best. Located along the waterfront of the Binnenalster, you’ll find traditional jewellers such as Wempe and Bucherer as well as luxury shoe-makers like Geox and Lloyd. Try on exclusive clothes at Burberry, René Lezard or Beutin, or the multi-brand store House of Trend.
In NIVEA’s flagship store you'll find the entire range of NIVEA products - and in NIVEA’s very own ‘Oasis of relaxation’ you may opt for massages and spa services after an intense shopping spree. Other beauty products and perfumes are offered by Douglas and Schwarzkopf.
The famous department store Alsterhaus, established in 1912, is one of the city’s most popular shopping destinations when it comes to high-end fashion, cosmetics, home furnishings and more. Don't miss the top floor, where upmarket grocery shopping amidst precious teas, champagnes, luxurious chocolates and scrumptious seafood awaits!
Dining
Café Alex, located inside the atmospheric Alsterpavillon, has been serving coffees since 1799. Patrons come flocking to its spacious decks to enjoy beautiful views over the Alster Lake, or Jungfernstieg, with its parade of elegant passersby. Nearby, people queue at the Warneke ice parlour as soon as the sun is out. For a luxurious dining experience, you can’t go wrong at the roof terrace of the Fairmont Four Seasons Vier Jahreszeiten hotel. On water level, the Friesenkeller offers a wonderful view of the Fleet and serves dishes ranging from savoury to sophisticated. For a coffee and a quick bite, the Dat Backhus bakery is conveniently located right on the Jungfernstieg U-Bahn exit.
