Refreshingly Fun
Comprehensive information on Hamburg’s water supply may not sound like the most exciting topic for an interactive museum at first, but you don’t have to be an engineer to enjoy WasserForum Hamburg. The exhibition’s design makes it accessible and fun for everyone, even kids! After all, you don’t just stand behind a velvet rope and look at these exhibits from afar - you get up close and interact with them, bringing waterworks to life. In fact, visitors can even walk through a well shaft.
The WasserForum: A Four-Part Exhibition
The exhibition is divided into four sections, each with its own space. The first room covers the history of Hamburg’s water supply, detailing its origins from around 600 years ago to combat cholera epidemics.
The exhibit on Hamburg’s modern water supply situates humans within the local ecosystem, detailing how this precious resource goes from groundwater to locals’ taps. Well construction, drinking water treatment, and quality monitoring are all explained here.
There is also an exhibit that discusses water more broadly as a resource the world over, discussing both earth’s water cycles and the geology of the Hamburg area in particular.
Additionally, visitors can learn about wastewater disposal and treatment by taking a walk through a true-to-life sewer or visiting the sewage treatment plant.
The Company Behind WasserForum Hamburg
The company Hamburg Wasser (lit. ‘Hamburg Water’) has been around for about 160 years. It’s responsible for the water supply and water-waste disposal management for Hamburg and the surrounding cities and municipalities.
With the WasserForum, Hamburg Wasser helps everyone understanding the value of this indispensable resource by making the many journeys of water in our society more tangible and by informing visitors about water and nature conservation.
