Easter in Hamburg
There is lots to celebrate during the long Easter weekend in Hamburg. Not only the blossoming trees and spring flowers, the city also overflows with street festivals, markets and delicious food. And if you’re lucky, the weather may play along nicely too. As the first rays of sunlight hit the city, Hamburg residents tend to flock to the Alster, the harbour the city's many parks en masse — a true spring migration!
Spending Easter in Hamburg with kids? Plenty of Hamburg's traditional Easter activities are perfect for kids and families!
Traditional Bonfires
In Northern Germany, the ancient ritual of Easter bonfires has been practiced for centuries. In parks and on the beaches along the Elbe river, people gather around the pyres to expel the evil spirits of winter. Book a trip on a riverboat to get a broader view of this fascinating practice from the water!
Easter Brunch
A favourite pastime during the Easter weekend is enjoying at least one opulent brunch with family or friends. The kids go on an egg hunt while the adults work their way through course after course of delicious food. Many cafes in Hamburg offer a special Easter brunch that should be booked in advance. Try Hotel Hafen Hamburg, Fillet of Soul, Landhaus Walter, Hotel Böttcherhof or one of the many other cafés the city has to offer!
Hamburg DOM
The spring edition of the famous Hamburg DOM funfair is a must-visit on Easter weekend in Hamburg. It is open on Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday but will remain closed on Good Friday, as that day is dedicated to contemplation. The endless array of attractions and food stands that make up Hamburg DOM can entertain any family for hours on end. From funfair must-haves like cotton candy, roller coasters and fun houses to German specialties like beer, Bratwurst and Schmalzkuchen pastry, this month-long event is brimming with excitement on Easter weekend. We've even heard through the grapevine that you might even run into the Easter Bunny!
Hamburg DOM is located conveniently in between tourist magnets like the port, St. Michael’s Church, the St. Pauli football stadium, Schanzenviertel and the Reeperbahn nightlife district.
