Fireworks in Hamburg

New Year’s Eve in Hamburg is nothing short of spectacular, with the city’s fireworks lighting up the night sky in dazzling displays of colour and sound. Fireworks have long been a cherished tradition in Germany, reflecting a nationwide enthusiasm that is unmatched in many other countries. From families setting off their own rockets in backyards to grand public displays, the vibrant celebrations embody a sense of collective joy and excitement.

However, this tradition is not without its controversies. In recent years, growing concerns over environmental impact, safety hazards, and noise pollution have sparked debates, with some advocating for a ban on personal fireworks.

Despite this, Hamburg remains a hotspot for New Year’s festivities, offering countless breathtaking vantage points to enjoy the displays—whether you seek the buzz of a bustling crowd or a quieter spot by the water. In this guide, we’ll explore the best places to experience the magic of Hamburg’s fireworks, while also keeping in mind the rules and regulations in place to ensure everyone’s safety.

Prohibited Areas

Fireworks are strictly prohibited around the Binnenalster and Rathausmarkt. The ban also applies to the streets Jungfernstieg, Neuer Jungfernstieg, Lombardsbrücke, Ballindamm, and Reesendamm.

Within these prohibited zones, firecrackers and rockets are not allowed between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. Only small fireworks, such as sparklers and snap peas, are permitted during this time.

Best Places to Watch Fireworks in Hamburg

Landungsbrücken
A prime spot with an excellent view, located right by the water. However, it’s one of the most crowded areas, so be prepared for a lively atmosphere.

Stintfang
Situated above the Landungsbrücken underground station, this location offers a fantastic vantage point and is easy to access. Unfortunately, it’s also extremely crowded.

Bei der Erholung
This narrow footpath in front of landmarks like the Hotel Hafen Hamburg, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, and the Bernhard Nocht Institute provides a great view, but it’s typically very crowded.

Johannisbollwerk / Vorsetzen
With plenty of space and a good view, this spot attracts large crowds, so expect it to be busy despite the available room.

Überseebrücke
While it offers a close-up view, the limited space often makes it challenging to secure a good vantage point.

Antoni Park / Park Fiction
Located slightly farther away, this spot still provides a decent view of the fireworks. Its proximity to the Reeperbahn contributes to the area being very crowded.

Fischmarkt
Positioned even further from the central action, this location usually offers a good view and tends to be slightly less crowded than the inner-city spots.

Dockland
Though located a fair distance from the Landungsbrücken piers, the Dockland’s viewing platform provides a stunning perspective of the fireworks. Note: Access requires climbing 140 steps on the building’s exterior.

Kehrwiederspitze / Sandtorhöft
Another excellent spot for views, though it’s likely to draw a crowd.

Kaiserkai
While the view here may be partially obstructed, the reduced visibility might result in fewer spectators, making it a less crowded option.

Marco-Polo-Terrassen
A more out-of-the-way location, where the view could be partially obscured. However, it’s generally less crowded, providing a more relaxed experience.

Kennedybrücke
Located next to the Lombardsbrücke, this bridge offers one of the best perspectives of the fireworks over the Außenalster.

Steinwerder (near the Alte Elbtunnel)
On the opposite side of the Elbe, this spot offers a refreshing perspective with views of both the city centre and the harbour panorama. Please note: The Alte Elbtunnel is closed on New Year’s Eve, so you’ll need to reach Steinwerder via Wilhelmsburg.

Altonaer Balkon
Though far from the Landungsbrücken piers, this elevated park (27 metres above the river) provides a magnificent view of the Elbe and the many fireworks along the river. Its spacious layout allows visitors to spread out, creating a more relaxed and less crowded atmosphere compared to other locations.

Important Notes and Safety Information

  • Fireworks cannot be viewed from the Landungsbrücken and Baumwall underground stations, as safety screens will be installed there.
  • The Old Elbe Tunnel will also be closed to pedestrians from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.
