Out of Hamburg's 40+ theatres, many offer the occasional English play, while others focus entirely on the language of Shakespeare.

International Plays at Thalia Theater

Love going to the theatre, but don’t speak German? Once a month, the Thalia Theater offers surtitles in English and other languages, such as French, Turkish, Polish and Arabic, especially for international residents and visitors. There are also more international plays in original language with (and without) German surtitles.

The English Theatre

This private, professional theatre was the first English theatre to be founded in the whole of Germany. Evening and daytime performances include plays of all genres in the original English language.

The Hamburg Players

This high-quality theatre group stages an entertaining mix of comical theatre pieces and classic dramas. Performances by The Hamburg Players take place at the Theater an der Marschnerstrasse.

The University Players

Part of Hamburg University's Institute of English and American Studies, this award-winning amateur group stages two productions per year, ranging from classical to modern plays in the original English. Shows take place in the Audimax auditorium on Hamburg University's campus.
