Thalia's Experimental Stage

Thalia Gaußstraße in Altona believes in new approaches to theatre and aesthetics, and puts the spotlight on new plays, newly discovered authors and young directors. Young talents in directing can develop their own signature style with the Thalia ensemble in theatrical experiments or adaptations of evergreens.

More often than not, they return to the intimate proximity of the Altona audience after years on the big stages. Even Dimiter Gotscheff, past master of German and Bulgarian drama, was drawn to Altona for his last Hamburg production.

Thalia Gaußstraße has three stages: the Garage, the Studio and the Ballroom. In each, the audience is only a few metres away from the action and can follow every movement and every stage detail. Apart from stage productions, Thalia Gaußstraße also hosts concerts, readings, talks, art sessions, and other culture events of any kind.

Launching Pad for Young Talents

The selection of plays is also influenced by the strong connection to the creative melting pot of the Ottensen neighbourhood. Ever since 2003, the renowned festival Körber Studio Junge Regie (lit.: ‘Körber Studio Young Directors’) has been an annual opportunity for young directors from Germany, Austria and Switzerland to show off their skills. This festival has become a launching pad for young and aspiring theatre-makers and a hallmark for Hamburg’s theatre scene.

A Note on Language

Plays at Thalia Gaußstraße are generally in German, though there may be occasional performances in more than one language. Visitors who would like to see a play on one of these stages should be able to understand enough German to follow the play to have the best possible experience.
