A Broadway Legend Reimagined

Wicked is one of the most successful musicals to ever run on Broadway. Since its 2003 premiere, over 60 million viewers worldwide have experienced the story of the two witches of Oz. And finally a production for German audiences hit the stage in Hamburg - the first new production of Wicked in 10 years! Audiences were treated to spectacular stage design, new effects and costumes. The popular characters and Grammy-nominated soundtrack by Oscar winner Stephen Schwartz was of course be retained.

Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz

Based on a novella by Gregory Maguire, Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzmann wrote a musical that completely turned the story of the literary and film classic The Wizard of Oz on its head. Wicked tells the unknown prehistory of the two witches Elphaba and Glinda - two total opposites. While the green-skinned Elphaba is decried as the Wicked Witch of the West, all of Oz worships Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. But as is so often the case, the boundaries between ‘good’ and ‘evil’ are not as clear as the ‘official’ story suggests.

A Special Friendship

Very few of the residents of Oz know that Glinda (who used to be called Galinda) and Elphaba were best friends - and even roommates - when they were at school. At first the two are as different as day and night and see themselves as archenemies. But despite their contrasts, a deep friendship develops between the two witches, which is often put to the test. Can their friendship withstand Elphaba's longing for respect and recognition, Galinda's desire for popularity, and their love for the same man? A visit to the Emerald City and the Wizard of Oz changes their lives forever.
