The PHŒNiX Festival is an exciting new addition to Hamburg's vibrant cultural landscape, dedicated to addressing socially relevant topics through a diverse range of artistic and culturally expressive events. This annual festival explores different themes each year, offering a platform for artists, performers, academics, and activists to engage with the community and foster dialogue on critical issues. With a mission to raise awareness and encourage social change, the festival provides a space where culture, history, and activism converge.
In its inaugural 2024 edition, titled Verfemte Kultur lebt! (English: ‘Ostraciszed Culture Lives!’), the festival shines a spotlight on cultural expressions that were threatened and suppressed by the Nazi regime. From Jewish to queer culture, from jazz to classical art, from Sinti and Roma traditions to drag performances, this year’s theme celebrates the resilience and survival of ostracised cultures. The slogan ‘In Hamburg sagt man – Nie wieder ist JETZT!’ (English: ‘In Hamburg we say: never again is NOW!’) serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of remembrance and resistance against fascism.
Events will take place at venues such as Jupiter, JazzHall, at Jungfernstieg, MARKK, and the Elbphilharmonie, making the festival an unforgettable journey through the heart of Hamburg’s cultural and historical landscape.
