For a fortnight each August the Elbphilharmonie turns its Grand Hall into a late-summer festival rather than a conventional concert series. Elbphilharmonie Sommer 2026 runs from 15 to 30 August and gathers symphony orchestras, jazz groups and world-music stars under one roof — a chance to hear the hall at its most playful before the tenth-anniversary season opens on 1 September.
The setting is part of the draw. After a concert you can linger on the public Plaza, with its wrap-around views over the River Elbe, HafenCity and the Speicherstadt, or walk the warehouse canals while the glass wave of the concert hall still glows. Several opening nights are co-presented with Kampnagel’s International Summer Festival, so the programme feels closer to a city-wide summer than a closed classical club.
What to expect in the Grand Hall
The house describes the bill as colourful as an ice-cream counter, and the 2026 line-up lives up to that. Malian Afro-pop star Fatoumata Diawara opens on Saturday 15 August with her show Massa. Further popular nights include The Cinematic Orchestra, Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai with the Nu Civilisation Orchestra (his only German date), fado singer Mariza with her Amor programme, jazz guitarist John Scofield’s Long Days Quartet, and accordion master Richard Galliano.
Classical highlights stretch from the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra under Keri-Lynn Wilson to Il Giardino Armonico with soprano Julia Lezhneva, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester with Philippe Jordan, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal with cellist Alisa Weilerstein, the Kansas City Symphony with violinist Gil Shaham, and a closing night from the Bundesjugendorchester. Most Grand Hall concerts start at 20:00. Check the official festival page for the exact night you want — some titles were already sold out at research time, with remaining tickets occasionally released at the box office.
Tickets, Plaza and a night in HafenCity
Buy through the Elbphilharmonie ticket shop rather than third-party resellers. Allow extra time on arrival: security checks, the curved Tube escalator and the climb to the Plaza all take longer than a standard concert-hall lobby. The Plaza itself is a public viewing terrace, so you can enjoy the harbour panorama even if you are not attending that evening’s concert.
HafenCity restaurants and Speicherstadt brick warehouses sit a short stroll away. U3 Baumwall is the most straightforward stop; bus 111 and harbour ferries also serve the quarter. Combine the concert with a daylight walk along the Elbe promenade, then return for the evening performance when the hall’s glass façade lights up.
