The Shortest Day of the Year
Every year on 21 December, the shortest day of the year, Hamburg joins cities across Germany and Europe in transforming unexpected places into temporary cinemas for Short Film Day. From living rooms and neighbourhood venues to public squares and established cinemas, the event highlights the richness and diversity of short filmmaking. Programmes span all genres and moods, featuring experimental films, family-friendly selections, poetic works and pieces by both emerging and established directors.
Creative Screenings Across Hamburg
Screenings in Hamburg often come with a creative twist: live music, film discussions, workshops or even culinary pairings. The day encourages communities to bring film into everyday spaces and to enjoy cinema in intimate or unconventional settings. Whether it’s a small gathering in a café or a larger event in a cultural venue, Short Film Day fosters connection, curiosity and shared viewing experiences across the city.
A Nationwide Initiative
Short Film Day has been celebrated in Germany since 2012 under the coordination of AG Kurzfilm. It offers an open invitation for anyone to participate, whether by attending a public screening or organising their own event. Hamburg residents can discover short films in unique settings city-wide, exploring how concentrated storytelling can spark emotion and conversation.
Short Film Day 2025
In 2025, Short Film Day takes place from 15 to 21 December under the nationwide motto JETZT! (“NOW!”). The theme calls on participants to engage actively with the present moment – socially, politically or personally. Anyone hosting a registered event before 25 November 2025 can enter the “Five Lucky Ones” competition, which awards five particularly original and inspiring concepts. A range of curated programmes for all ages is available at special rates for organisers throughout the event period.
How to Take Part
Anyone in Hamburg can get involved by hosting their own screening or taking part in the many public events across the city. Screenings can be held almost anywhere – cinemas, cultural centres, schools, cafés, community halls, private homes and even outdoor spaces. Whether large or small, every gathering contributes to Germany’s biggest celebration of the short film and offers a chance to experience powerful stories in compact form.
