It's a feat to be proud of that the Hamburg International Queer Film Festival (formerly the Lesbisch Schwule Filmtage Hamburg in German) has been running for more than three decades. The festival has seen attitudes towards the LGBTQIA+ communities in Hamburg evolve greatly in that time, all the while creating a name for itself as the longest running and largest queer film festival in all of German - not to mention the second largest film festival in Hamburg (after the renowned Hamburg FilmFest).
In this light, it is even more impressive that the festival is organised almost entirely by volunteers who devote their free time to such a worthy project. This approach has proved successful: every year, the festival attracts approximately 15,500 visitors to screenings of around 130 works, ranging from narrative feature films to documentaries and short films. From political to experimental to light-hearted, the eclectic mix of genres is united in its egalitarian approach and LGBTQIA+-friendly choice of topics. Films are shown in the original version with English subtitles (if indicated as 'OmeU').
