Every year, Hamburg's museums pick one special night in spring and invite the city to stay up late with them for the Long Night of Museums (German: Lange Nacht der Museen). All across town, museums open their doors to interested visitors from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., providing a unique look at these beloved institutions.
Fittingly, the event's motto is ‘We're staying awake!' (in German, ‘Wir bleiben wach!’) - and there’s plenty to stay awake for: around 50 museums invite visitors to enjoy diverse exhibitions and special programmes only found on this one special night. What’s more, the motto has a double meaning, not just inviting the city to stay awake for the event, but also encouraging social alertness to meet the challenges of our time.
Youth Night: Discounts for Young People
The Long Night of Museums is a particularly good deal for young people. The Young Night ticket (German: Junge-Nacht-Ticket) is for young people between the ages of 13 and 17 and costs just €4. As always, children under twelve can attend free of charge.
Visitors can travel between museums on specially arranged bus shuttle lines as well as all regular HVV routes. The ticket also entitles the holder to use the Historic Hamburg S-Bahn between Altona and Barmbek.
From Dinosaurs to Feminist Medical History
The participating museums put together exciting programmes for the Long Night of Museums. In addition to night-time insights into the exhibitions, visitors can look forward to hands-on activities, tastings, demonstrations and guided tours by experts.
In past years, for example, the Polizeimuseum (Police Museum) offered a report on the life of a crime scene cleaner, while the Natural Geology Museum answered the question of what dinosaurs did at night. The Museum of Medical History discussed why men should be grateful for feminism.
