A City Made for Books
From Arno Schmidt and Wolfgang Borchert to Siegfried Lenz, Hamburg has long been a city of German letters. The Harbour Front Literaturfestival builds on that, bringing national and international authors each autumn for readings from new and much-anticipated books. Children’s and young-adult events remain part of the mix, so the programme spans generations as well as genres.
Readings by the Water — and Across the City
What began on the harbour now spreads across Hamburg: waterfront rooms, theatres, concert halls, churches and contemporary venues, including the Elbphilharmonie. Under the artistic direction of Joachim Lux, recent editions have mixed discovery and debate with music and other art forms. Popular fiction sits beside more experimental work; the festival’s idea is that literature helps make sense of a complicated present.
Harbour Front 2026
The 2026 festival runs from 19 September to 11 October with more than seventy events at over twenty venues. A thematic strand titled AMERIKA looks at political, cultural and social questions through literature and discussion. A pre-opening reading by Nobel laureate Han Kang at the Elbphilharmonie on 6 September starts the literary autumn ahead of the official opening weekend.
