A Table for the Whole City

Every summer, Hamburg's Rathausmarkt plays host to one of the city's most distinctive community events. The Longest Table of Democracy — known in German as the Längste Tafel der Demokratie — stretches a remarkable 400 metres through the heart of the city, bringing together organisations, initiatives, and residents in a shared celebration of diversity, solidarity, and civic life.

The event marks the opening of the Hamburger Stiftungstage, a city-wide festival of charitable foundations, and is organised in partnership by the AKTIVOLI-Landesnetzwerk and the lagfa (Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft der Freiwilligenagenturen Hamburg).

A Table for Everyone

No two seats are quite the same. Each table along the 400-metre stretch is hosted by a different organisation or initiative, making the full length of the table a living showcase of Hamburg's civic and community life. Come to chat, eat, play, dance, or debate — the spirit of the event is that everything goes, and everyone is welcome.

Beyond the table itself, the Rathausmarkt stage hosts music, dance, performance, and talks throughout the afternoon.

Find Your Cause

Representatives from the AKTIVOLI network and the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft der Freiwilligenagenturen Hamburg will be on hand to advise visitors on volunteering and civic engagement, and to connect them directly with organisations looking for new members and supporters. Whether you already have a cause in mind or are simply curious about getting involved, this is a great opportunity to find your place in Hamburg's voluntary sector.

The Big Donation Drive

In partnership with Hanseatic Help, the Hamburger Tafel, and DER HAFEN HILFT!, the event hosts a large-scale donation drive collecting goods for people in need. Visitors are encouraged to bring whatever they can give and together make a tangible gesture of solidarity.

The Dance Floor Comes to the Rathausmarkt

The Tanztriennale Hamburg brings its programme to the table on 20th June, transforming the square in front of the main stage into a dancefloor. Visitors can watch dance performances or join in themselves with an All Moves session — a celebration of movement, encounter, and community open to all.

For more information, visit AKTIVOLI or the Stiftungsbüro Hamburg.
