University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE)
The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) is an important research facility and hospital in the north of the city. The UKE and Universität Hamburg jointly run the Faculty of Medicine and train medical and dental students from around the world. They have a number of joint facilities which are used by both students and the public. The UKE's Medical Library houses a vast collection of print and digital media for research and study as well as online learning resources. Students have access to the Anatomical Collection located at the UKE for learning purposes.
As one of Europe’s most modern clinics, UKE also houses research facilities containing the most modern, cutting edge technologies to further their studies. UKE researches in five main areas; neuroscience; oncology; cardiovascular research; health sciences research; and immunology, immunity and infection. Through collaboration with other universities and research facilities in the area, UKE offers medical staff and external researchers access to core modern facilities for investigation. Large collaborative projects are possible thanks to funding from the European Union, as well as the Hamburg authorities responsible for Science, Research and Equality (BWFG), amongst other sources.
Hospital and facilities
With the motto 'Knowledge, Research, Healing through Shared Competence', UKE ensures high standards of care for all patients. Many patients receive treatments which are only available at UKE. There are 14 departments, which contain many interdisciplinary clinics and institutes, and within the UKE grounds there is the Martiniklinik ─ a world leading clinic for prostate cancer. There is also the University Heart Centre, and the University Cancer Centre, meaning UKE has the most varied range of treatments available in Hamburg. Also notable is the fact that UKE is the largest transplant facility in North Germany. In order to look after the well-being of both patients and their families, UKE even has a shopping arcade, with a post office, supermarket and hairdresser. The multi-lingual staff in the International Office can help international patients to coordinate administrative, financial and organisational issues, ensuring a smooth process.
