Cap San Diego

Cap San Diego Museum

The 159-metres-long vessel is said to be the largest seaworthy museum ship in the world. Explore her decks and learn all about Cap San Diego's history, for example how the officers dined, where they slept and the routes the giant vessel took. See the mighty machine room, and get a glimpse of the ship's storage capabilities.

Also known as the 'White Swan of the South Atlantic', MS Cap San Diego sailed the South Atlantic between 1961 and 1988 transporting goods like coffee, cotton, cocoa, beef and clothing to Germany, after which the ship was 'retired' and turned into a museum. But don't be fooled — the 'White Swan' is diligently maintained by 130 workers and volunteers, and is still seaworthy. Several times a year, she hosts up to 500 guests and embarks upon a journey along the Elbe.

Explore the ship yourself with the audio guide or join a guided tour. See the permanent exhibition, watch a musical or comedy show, or a book one of the reading events for kids. Having too much fun to leave for the night? Book a room on board. You can even request the former captain's quarters.

Particularly unique is the high ropes course — the only such floating ropes course in all of Germany. Groups of 10 to 60 people can learn how to climb 30 metres above the Elbe! More on the vessel's website. www.capsandiego.de
